Advanced Courses 2020

We piloted two new advanced courses in 2019. These are being updated and we add the much awaited third course to this trilogy. As these courses form a logical progression and topics have been re-arranged, it is recommended to take all three courses, even if you attended last year’s pilots. The third course has been discounted for those who take all three courses this year.

Term 1 - Leaving the Solar System (Finished)

In this course we leave our Solar System for the first time and explore up to a distance of about 5000 light years. We discuss major observation techniques in modern astronomy and look at different types of stars and other celestial objects we encounter and their properties. We also discuss the search for exoplanets, which happens particularly in this region we call the Solar neighbourhood.

This course starts Monday 17 February, and continues on 24 February, and 02, 09, 16, and 23 March. Possible extension on 30 March.

Cost $70 for 6 (or 7) weeks
(Enrolled or home-schooled students half price).

Term 3 - Exploring the Milky Way (Finished)

Here we travel up to about 500,000 light years to include our entire home galaxy. We will look at the structure and dynamics of this grand spiral galaxy in detail. This includes a dive into the very centre with its supermassive black hole. We will talk about Dark Matter and look at surrounding Dwarf galaxies. We discuss the latest discoveries and will be amazed at what astronomers have learned about our galaxy in just the latest hundred years.

This course starts Monday 3 August, and continues on 10, 17, 24, and 31 August, and 07 September. Likely extension on 14 September.

Cost $70 for 6 (or 7) weeks
(Enrolled or home-schooled students half price).

Term 4 - Going Deep

In this brand new course we are travelling all the way to the edge of the observable Universe and on the way discuss the various structures and super structures that make up the Universe. We will talk about the paradigm shifts in modern cosmology: the expanding and the accelerating Universe and review some of the really big questions in modern astronomy and cosmology about how it all began and where it is going.

This course starts Monday 19 October, and continues on 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 November, and 7 December. (Not on 26 October which is Labour Day).

Cost $70 for 6 (or 7) weeks
(Enrolled or home-schooled students half price).
For those who have enrolled this year in both advanced courses Leaving the Solar System and Exploring the Milky Way, the cost is $35 for adults and $20 for students.

Enrollment for all courses in 2020 is now closed.
